Toprol-XL
What is Toprol-XL?
The brand name Toprol-XL is also known under it’s generic drug name of Metoprolol, with the derivatives of Metoprolol Succinate and Metoprolol Tartrate.
Metoprolol (Toprol-XL) is a type of targetted beta receptor blocker drug. Beta-blockers affect the heart rate, and circulation of the blood flow through the arteries and the veins, which is used to treat many different disorders of the cardiovascular system. These include high blood pressure (hypertension), heart attack and angina pectoris (a type of chest pain which is caused by lack of oxygen to the heart due to clogged arteries). It’s component ingredient is metropolol succinate, and it is recommended for the treatment of patients presenting stable symptoms with either class II and III heart failure which is usually caused by heart muscle disorders, high blood pressure, or blocked heart arteries.
Toprol-XL can be effective when used as a single drug treatment, or in combination with other high blood pressure medications. It is usually prescribed for high blood pressure. The method by which this drug works, as with all beta blockers – is that it has the effect of reducing the body’s demand for oxygen, whilst decreasing the rate, and strength of heart contractions. The net result of it’s action is to achieve a lower blood pressure for the patient. There are also some alternative conditions for which Toprol-XL may be prescribed, including the treatment of aggressive behaviour, the relief of temporary anxiety, and the prevention of migraines.
What is the most important fact about Toprol aka Metoprolol?
If you are already taking Toprol medication, it is most important that you do not stop taking the without first consulting with your Physician. Suddenly stopping the medication may harm your condition. In the event of you requiring any kind of surgery, you may need to temporarily stop using Toprol. However, in this instance it is very important to inform your surgeon in advance that you are using Toprol. Toprol should be considered to be part of a complete program of treatment for hypertension that may also include diet, exercise, and weight management. It is important that you carefully adhere to your diet, medication, and exercise routines if you are being treated for hypertension. The Hypertension condition may have no discernible symptoms, such that you may not even feel that you continue to suffer from high blood pressure. It is important to continue using this medicine as directed, even if you feel well.
How should I take Toprol-XL (Metoprolol)?
You should take Toprol-XL medication exactly as it was prescribed for you by your Doctor. It is important that you do not take the medication in larger amounts, or for longer periods than recommended. The drug should be taken with a full glass of water, as a part of a regular daily regimen. Ideally, this medication should be taken with food or just after a meal. A Toprol XL tablet can be divided in half if your doctor has told you to do so. The half tablet should be swallowed whole, without chewing or crushing. Chewing or crushing the pill could cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.
To be sure this medication is helping your condition, your blood pressure will need to be checked on a regular basis. It is important that you not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor. If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon that you are using Toprol. You may need to briefly stop using Toprol before having surgery.
Who should not take Toprol-XL and Metoprolol?
This drug should be avoided by people with any of the following:-
- inadequate output from the heart
- certain heart irregularities
- severe bradycardia (extreme slowing of the heart rate)
- sick sinus syndrome
- cardiogenic shock
You should use Toprol-XL with caution if you suffer from any liver disease, peripheral vascular disease, asthma, seasonal allergies, or other bronchial conditions. Inform your medical health care provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before beginning the treatment because its effects in this situations have not been adequately studied.
Side Effects of Toprol-XL and Metoprolol
Toprol can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol, which could increase drowsiness or possibly dizziness while you are taking Toprol. Side effects can vary in degrees of seriousness.
You should seek emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of serious side effects:-
- swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
- hives
- difficulty breathing
Other less serious side effects are more likely to occur, such as vomiting, decreased sex drive, insomnia, tiredness anxiety or nervousness.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. You should consult your Doctor if you suspect that you may be experiencing any other side effects as a result of taking this medecine.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If your next dose is less than 4 hours away, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
You should immediately seek emergency medical attention if you suspect that you may have used too much of this medicine. Typical Symptoms of an overdose of Toprol may include uneven heartbeats, shortness of breath, bluish-colored fingernails, dizziness, weakness, fainting, or seizure (convulsions).
